Tasmania’s Health Minister Michael Ferguson today launched Alzheimer’s Australia Tasmania’s (AAT) ‘Dementia Awareness Month 2016’.
Dementia Awareness Month is an annual series of events organised by Alzheimer’s Australia and supported by the Australian Government to improve awareness and understanding about dementia in the Australian community.
AAT Chief Executive Tony Reidy said “During this month we focus on people with dementia, their carers and the public by sharing the facts, dispelling the myths and highlighting the support AAT can provide to people living with dementia and those caring for them”.
Alzheimer’s Australia Tasmania is the peak body in the state for people with dementia, their families and carers. It provides advocacy, respite care and other support services, education and information throughout the state. “More than 353,800 people in Australia have dementia, and this number is projected to reach more than 900,000 by 2050”, Tony Reidy said.
The theme for Dementia Awareness Month 2016 is ‘You are not alone’. This theme aims to raise awareness of the support and services available for people with dementia and their families and carers. During this month AAT is calling for greater awareness and understanding of dementia, so people living with the condition feel less isolated and alone.
“We are challenging and encouraging Tasmanians to learn more about dementia – help us break down the many misconceptions so that together we can reduce the social isolation that too often occurs after a diagnosis of dementia,” Tony Reidy said.
Recent research has indicated that social isolation is one of the most significant issues people face once diagnosed with dementia. That same research tells us that:
- 60% of Australians admit they know very little about dementia
- 25% of Australians find people with dementia frightening
Mr Reidy said that by providing information and education we can help to break down stigmas and allow people to live well with dementia.
