Dementia Essentials – CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia 

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for people currently working in aged care, health care and community services who regularly provide assistance to people living with dementia.

This is a nationally accredited unit with written and workplace assessment requirements that will give you a comprehensive knowledge of dementia.

Dementia Essentials is part of the nationally funded Dementia Training Australia program and is delivered by Dementia Australia.

What accreditation do I receive?

Upon completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment that will enable them to claim credits if you plan to undertake a related qualification.

How much does it cost?

Dementia Essentials is a Commonwealth funded initiative providing fully funded education for those working with people living with dementia.

What does the course entail?

In this 3 day accredited course, you will learn how to:

  • incorporate therapeutic communication techniques;
  • apply a person-centred approach;
  • develop useful strategies to respond to changed behaviours;
  • identify ways to engage a person with purpose and meaning.


To be eligible for the Dementia Essentials program, you must be directly working with people living with dementia and be able to be supervised interacting with 2 people living with dementia to satisfy the workplace assessment criteria. If a person cannot be supervised, they can receive a certificate of attendance.

How is the course delivered?

The course can be delivered at your workplace in a format that is convenient to your organisation and meets your staff’s needs.

There will also be a number of courses being held across the country, please check education events in your State or Territory or contact your local education team. The Statement of Attainment will be issued by Dementia Australia Vic. RTO Code 2512.
