Dementia Australia and Ballarat Health Services are pleased to announce the launch of the the Ballarat FTD Carer Group. This group is modelled on the successful FTD Carer Group in Geelong, which came about following a pilot research study on supporting the needs of local families caring for individuals with FTD.
Findings from the study highlighted that being part of a support group with guidance from health professionals supported caregiver specific challenges in caring for someone with FTD.
The Ballarat FTD Carer Group will meet monthly, facilitated by a neuropsychologist and a dementia counsellor. The group offers two different areas of knowledge and expertise about FTD and the impact of brain function, the latest research, local support and services, as well as practical strategies to manage behaviours.
Referrals to the Ballarat FTD Carer Group require a face to face meeting with the facilitators prior to joining.
The aim of this face to face meeting is to provide an opportunity to discuss the diagnosis, explore expectations of the group as well as some of the stages and variants of FTD.
