Young beauty pageant puts the spotlight on dementia

Ebonee Deakes is fundraising for Dementia Australia (Qld)

A Ferny Hills schoolgirl is helping to raise awareness about dementia, which can affect people as young as 30, as part of her Miss Diamond Australia Young Beauty Pageant this Saturday.

16 year old Ebonee Deakes’ motivation to use the pageant to raise funds and awareness about this important condition was simple; helping a cause very close to her heart after her Grandfather, Stanley Deakes, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia five years ago.

“Dementia isn’t as well-known as some other health conditions such as cancer and through this pageant I really wanted to help shine the spotlight on this condition,” said Ebonee.

Dementia affects 77,633 Queenslanders and that number is expected to increase dramatically to almost a quarter of a million people by 2056.

As part of her final presentation on Saturday in Acacia Ridge, Ebonee will be talking about her chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Australia (Qld), and what it means to her to be supporting people living with dementia.

“I was 12 when Grandad was diagnosed and it was a big shock as I really didn’t see it coming and didn’t really know much about dementia at that age.”

“Everyone used to talk about cancer but you don’t really know much about other conditions when you are younger.”

“Dementia is a lot more public and in the news now than it used to be and I really want to help spread the word further about how it can impact not just the person involved, but also their whole family.”

“I would like the funds raised to go towards wherever it can be of best use, whether that be research or directly helping those in the community who need help the most.”

When asked about what advice she would give others who might be going through a similar situation, her message is simple.

“Do as much as you can and cherish your time together.”

As part of her pageant duties Ebonee will also be attending Australia’s largest dementia fundraiser, Memory Walk & Jog, on her 17th birthday on Sunday 28th May. To register visit www.memorywalk.com.au
