Glyn McKay was diagnosed with dementia five years ago, but his wife of 59 years Dawn, said that it hasn’t changed his “lovely nature”.
Sharing the lived experience of dementia, consumers play a vital role in helping us educate and raise awareness of dementia in the public, through appearances in the media.
Both Glyn and Dawn have featured in a number of media reports about dementia.
“Anything Glyn and I can do to help, we’re happy to do it,” Dawn said.
The couple recently featured in a Seven News report announcing the allocation of the Federal Government’s $40 million National Institute for Dementia Research grants to 76 research fellows.
Dawn said each time they have participated in a media interview they have found the process an enjoyable experience.
“I’ve always found them so good. I’ve found everyone very nice and if you let them know there may be a problem, they’re usually very good,” Dawn said.
“Sometimes people don’t know how to react but if you tell them, they’ll treat you really well.”
Dementia Australia thanks Glyn and Dawn for helping us spread the word.
