Indigenous Hip-Hop Project: Yarn up about dementia

Dementia Australia, the Gunditjmara community, Nathan Lovett-Murray, Winda Mara Aboriginal Corporation and Indigenous Hip Hop Projects have collaborated on the production of a hip hop music resource on dementia, wellbeing, culture and respect.

The project workshop was held from June 29 to July 3, prior to NAIDOC 2015. It was filmed on Gunditjmara country with the youth of the Gunditjmara communities of Heywood, Portland and Hamilton. The children yarned dementia and Alzheimer’s disease during the workshop before writing the lyrics and recording the song over the first two days. These young artists wrote about the tough subject of dementia and the alarming prevalence rate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The song aims to raise awareness of a healthy lifestyle to combat this chronic disease and to educate about treating people with dementia with respect and dignity. Check it out below:

The following two days involved filming at various locations on Gunditjmara country guided by Nathan Lovett-Murray. The resource was then launched to the Gunditjmara community at a community celebration at the Winda Mara offices to a large audience of family and friends.
