We are conducting a research study to find out if a music-based training program improves cognitive performance, mood, and daytime functioning in older adults with memory difficulties. We are interested in assessing the efficacy of our music-based training program on promoting brain plasticity.

Participants will be randomly allocated to learning piano, signing in a choir or watching music related films for 12 weeks at the Conservatorium of Music in the City.

This study has been approved by the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee 2023/026

Participation

We are seeking participants who meet the following criteria:

  • 60-90 years of age
  • experiencing memory difficulties, but do NOT have a diagnosis of dementia.

Participants must be able to come to the Conservatorium of Music in the city once a week on a Thursday from 11am-3pm for 12 weeks.

Participants will also need to attend the Brain and Mind Centre in Camperdown before and after the 12 weeks for an MRI scan and blood collection, and complete a 1.5 hour zoom with a neuropsychologist on zoom to assess their memory.

If you are interested in participating OR would like more information, please contact Zoe Menczel Schrire

Participant duration

Two hours per week for 12 weeks, plus 1.5 hours in person and 1.5 hours on zoom before and after the 12 week intervention.
