Safeguarding vulnerable people in institutional settings across the lifespan
This research aims to understand and enhance safeguarding practices in residential aged care; more specifically, ew want to understand the behaviour and decision-making of staff in preventing and intervening in sexual violence and abuse of older people in residential aged care. This also includes exploring the factors that influence staff intervention. This research ultimately seeks to examine staff perceptions of what works well and what may need improving in protecting older people against harm.
This study has been approved by the University of the Sunshine Coast Human Research Ethics Committee (S231879)
Participation
Staff who work in an aged care facility in Australia, including employees and volunteers, who work in any role (e.g. direct care staff, ancillary staff, etc.) may be eligible to participate. Staff must be aged 18 years or older be proficient in English.
This research includes participation in a confidential, online interview (maximum 60 minutes duration). These interviews will ask participants what they think can be done to enhance the capability of staff to contribute to the prevention of sexual violence and abuse of older people in residential aged care. We believe the voices of staff working in institutions are crucial for identifying viable, realistic strategies for prevention.
