Advocates provide feedback for government inquiries into NDIS and dental services

Advocate consultation on the NDIS review
Dementia Australia has received feedback from approximately 50 Advocates regarding their experiences with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The feedback revealed key issues such as a lack of dementia education among local area coordinators, inadequate plans, NDIS process difficulties, unawareness of available supports and other barriers to accessing supports.
Advocate feedback will inform Dementia Australia’s submission and contribute to a final report which will be provided by the Independent Review Panel to Disability Reform Ministers by October.
Advocate consultation on access to dental services
Dementia Advocates provided information about their experiences of the availability, accessibility and affordability of public dental services for people living with dementia for a government inquiry into the provision and access to dental services in Australia.
Dementia Australia received feedback from approximately 30 advocates regarding their experiences with dental services.
Key issues raised included long wait times in accessing public dental services, high cost of private dental services, lack of prioritisation of oral health in residential aged care facilities, lack of dementia education among dental professionals and care staff at residential aged care facilities. Advocates also provided recommendations for improvement.
This feedback informed Dementia Australia’s submission and will inform the Inquiry Committee’s reports, with the interim report due to be presented by 20 June and a final report by 28 November.
