Developing Biomarkers for Vascular Cognitive Impairment

We are looking to validate new brain imaging techniques to diagnose vascular dementia and vascular cognitive impairment. 

New brain imaging techniques include MRI with an injected contrast and a brain function MRI with a breathing task. These will be done along with standard MRI scans, fasted blood tests, and memory assessments. 

This study has ethical approval from the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (2022/ETH02289)

Participation

People who meet the following criteria may be able to participate in the study: 

  • Aged 50-80 years old
  • Diagnosed with vascular dementia or vascular cognitive impairment, or
  • Have cognitive difficulties with a history of cardiac or vascular risk factors with no diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease
  • Able to converse in English
  • Able to travel to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney for blood tests, memory assessments, and MRI brain scans 

Participant duration

Two half day visits within 1 month, one follow-up phone call (30 mins) one year later
