Enhancing Navigation and Access to Cognitive-Friendly Technology (ENACT): Developing a Roadmap for Technology Design
People with cognitive impairment often try new technologies but discontinue using them over time. Currently, there's no clear guidance for developers on how to design technology that these users will maintain long-term adherence to.
The ENACT project will create the first roadmap for building "cognitive-friendly" technology by working directly with people who have cognitive challenges, their support people, and technology experts to develop practical design recommendations.
The study has received approval from the University of Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee (Project Number: 2025/HE000039)
Participation
People that meet the following criteria may be eligible to participate in the project.
People with Cognitive Impairment:
• Diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or dementia
• Age 18 or older
• Able to communicate independently in English
Support Persons:
• Currently supporting someone with cognitive impairment
• Age 18 or older
• Able to communicate independently in English
Other Participants (clinicians, technology developers, implementation scientists):
• Relevant experience working with people with cognitive impairment
• Age 18 or older
• Able to communicate independently in English
There are two elements to participation (Workstream 1 and Workstream 2) and both can be in person (Herston, Qld) or online,
Workstream 1 - World Café Discussions:
• Initial phone consultation
• Two 1.5-hour group sessions
• Small groups of 6 people discussing technology experiences and barriers
• Can be conducted in-person or via conference call
Workstream 2 - Co-Design Process:
• Three sessions: needs prioritisation, roadmap development, and evaluation
• 45-60 minute workshops for each session
• Mix of in-person, online, and conference call options
• Collaborative activities including idea generation and problem-solving
Participants will receive a $75 gift voucher per session they attend as reimbursement for their time commitment.
Participant duration
1.5 hours maximum for World Cafe and 1 hour for Co-Design
