Word knowledge tasks to assess cognitive abilities

Charles Darwin University

As we get older, some thinking skills, such as speed, can slow down, while our knowledge of words usually stays strong. This study is testing whether a short online word task can use a person's own word knowledge as a personal benchmark for understanding how they process information. We would especially like to hear from people who have noticed changes in their memory or thinking.

This study has been approved by the Charles Darwin University Human Research Ethics Committee (EC00154) - approval number H26080

Participation

Who can take part: adults aged 55 to 85 who can read English comfortably and manage their everyday tasks without needing help from others to remember them. People with or without concerns about their memory or thinking are welcome.

What is involved: a short online questionnaire (about 5 minutes), then an online word task where you decide whether letter strings are real English words (about 10 minutes). You will be sent a link a few days later to repeat the task. Everything is done online on a computer or smartphone. After the second task, you can enter a draw to win a $100 voucher. Participation is voluntary and you can stop at any time.
