Dementia Advocates Bruce McDermaid and Lil Mirtl joined the Dementia Action Week working group earlier this year to add their living experience expertise to the strategy for one of Dementia Australia’s most important awareness raising campaigns.

Bruce, who is a carer for his brother who lives with dementia, said it was an honour to be chosen to be part of the working group.

“To be part of such a knowledgeable and dedicated group of people that are all working together to ensure this year’s Dementia Action Week is the best ever, is such a privilege,” Bruce said.

“It was also a challenge knowing that I was there on behalf of all the wonderful Advocates across the country.

“I think it was my first meeting when a discussion was taking place that I disagreed with, contemplating that I may have a very short term on this group, I expressed my opposing opinion and not only was I listened to, I was able to express my views and convince the group to reconsider their opinions,” Bruce said.

Lil, who lives with dementia, said she has really enjoyed participating in the working group.

“I was a respected individual before my dementia diagnosis and I want to continue to feel that way as I take this journey into the future,” Lil said.

“I believe that we can improve outcomes for those living with dementia and their carers by improving community understanding and acceptance in making our cities, towns, communities and organisations inclusive and dementia-friendly.”

Bruce and Lil contribute their knowledge on how best to reach different audiences like other Advocates, Dementia Alliances and the general public. They have also shared their thoughts on campaign concepts, graphic designs and different resources to support the community to take action during Dementia Action Week.

Senior Media and Communications Advisor Leisa Hurst who chairs the working group said Bruce’s and Lil’s contributions had been fantastic.

“Having Bruce’s and Lil’s living experience in the working group really helps us understand how best we can get the message of Dementia Action Week out to the broader community,” Leisa said. “They provide advice on what tips and resources will resonate, and how we can support our most engaged audiences like Advocates and Dementia Friends to spread the word to their networks.”

Lil said it was important that everyone walked alongside people living with dementia.

“Let’s throw away the stereotypes that skew our perspectives and see the individual who is doing their best to live their best lives within the confines of a diagnosis.”
