Do we make a difference?

A female aged care worker showing a photo album to an elderly man.

The following poem was written by Michelle Lucas. After working in aged care for many years, Michelle was inspired to write poetry about her experiences working with families, being a part of a family with a loved with dementia and observing the unending love and dedication families can bring. Thank you, Michelle, for sharing this touching poem with us.

To some our jobs appear to be

somewhat trivial and trite,

to take some old dear out shopping,

for a coffee or a bite.

But is that really all we're doing?

are we only outdoor maids?

is it real or pure imagination?

when true friendship is displayed.

We don't just help with shopping

paying bills, and reading mail,

or visits to the cemetery,

so, what does this job entail?

We have empathy and patience,

we comfort, listen, and reassure,

we care about our clients

of that you can be sure.

We bring dignity, and independence,

we bring safety and build up trust.

We provide company, go on outings

We share laughter, that’s a must!

But it’s not all one way this job of ours,

we are given so much more,

like the endless stores of knowledge

recipes, remedies, and stories galore.

So, if you're wondering what we are doing,

if you think it’s not worthwhile,

just stop and ask the elderly

you can't deny that smile.

Yes, we are making a difference!
