“Inside the O’Briens” is the May Pick of the Month

“Inside the O’Briens” tells the story of Boston cop Joe O’Brien, who begins making uncharacteristic errors which he attributes to stress. After agreeing to see a doctor, he receives the shocking diagnosis of Huntington’s disease. The story follows Joe and his family, including his four grown children who are also at risk of inheriting the condition.
Huntington’s disease is an inherited genetic condition that causes dementia. A faulty gene leads to a slow, progressive decline in a person’s movement, memory, thinking and behaviour. A parent with Huntington’s has a fifty-fifty chance of passing the condition down to their children.
May is Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month and to help raise awareness, the Dementia Australia librarians have chosen this novel “Inside the O’Briens” by New York Times Bestselling Author Lisa Genova as the May Pick of the Month.
Lisa Genova is an American neuroscientist and author, best known for her debut novel, “Still Alice.” You can find “Inside the O’Briens,” “Still Alice,” and other e-books and audiobooks by Lisa Genova in the Dementia Australia library’s e-collection.
