Managing the emotional toll of caring for someone living with dementia

When Jenny’s husband Noel was diagnosed with dementia, she began grieving long before he died in December 2023.
She knew their life together would never be the same but amid the grief she also found strength and purpose.
“One night, Noel turned to me and said, ‘Everyone has something in their lives to contend with. This is ours and we'll manage it with grace.’”
That moment became the foundation for how they would navigate the years ahead.
Grief can be a major part of the experience of caring for someone living with dementia – not only after a person has passed away, but well before that, as you adjust to changes in your relationship and daily life.
In episode three of Hold the Moment’s second season, Jenny reflected on the moments of quiet connection that helped her through and the value of support from others who understood the journey.
The episode also includes Dementia Australia counsellor Mara’s professional insights on how carers can learn to recognise their own grief and support themselves through the process.
“When you turn towards your grief and you start to acknowledge it, you start to make room for it,” Mara said.
“It opens up the possibility of having a different relationship with the experience that you're going through.”
