Update from the Dementia Australia Advisory Committee

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had an exciting and eventful Dementia Action Week. I am actually writing this the week before, so I am still anticipating what will happen, but by the time you read this it will be history. Hopefully it moves us forward into a better future.

It was fantastic to catch up with quite a few Dementia Advocates at the International Dementia Conference in Sydney recently. It was a very good conference, with lots of practical presentations – many given by people living with dementia and those who care for us, which is really encouraging.

Whilst on this subject, for those of you who have not attended any dementia conferences and would like to, don’t be put off by the sometimes exorbitant prices. Contact the organisers to explain your circumstances as a person living with dementia or care partner and ask what bursaries are available. They will generally offer a special rate or even free access, you just have to ask.

Finally, if you haven’t caught up with the fantastic Dementia Australia podcast, “Hold the Moment”, now is the time. It is full of real stories about life after a dementia diagnosis. The podcast is a series of interviews of people living with dementia, led by Dementia Advocate Jim Rogers, who lives with younger onset dementia, and journalist Hamish Macdonald, whose father has dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson’s.

I am looking forward to catching up with many of you at the next Dementia Advocate’s online drop-in meeting.

If you have any news or queries, please feel free to contact me or other members of the DAAC on our email DAAC@dementia.org.au. We are always pleased to hear from you.

Until the next time.
