To launch World Alzheimer’s Month and in the lead up to Dementia Action Week, 15-21 September, the Parliamentary Friends of Dementia and Dementia Australia invite you to attend an event at Parliament House to hear the firsthand experiences of Australians living with dementia, their families, and carers.

With dementia soon to become Australia’s leading cause of death, this is the public health, disability and aged care challenge facing Australia. People living with dementia, their families and carers are depending on us to get this right - now. Nobody can do it alone.

This term, Dementia Australia is urging the 48th Parliament to take bold and immediate action:

  • Australians of all ages need to know what they can do to look after their brain health across their life course.
  • People of all ages living with dementia, their families and carers must have the support of nationally consistent specialist dementia care and navigation service on receiving a diagnosis.
  • The aged care, health and disability workforce need support to develop and embed dementia knowledge and skills to provide high quality care for people living with dementia.

In 2025, there are an estimated 433,300 adults and 1,500 children living with dementia in Australia. Without significant intervention, this is expected to increase to an estimated 812,500 Australian adults by 2054. The 48th Parliament must be the one to commit to taking action on dementia.

Speakers will include:

  • People with the living experience of dementia
  • Merran Kelsall AO, Chair Dementia Australia
  • Professor Tanya Buchanan, CEO Dementia Australia

Dementia Australia acknowledges the support of the Federal Parliamentary Friends of Dementia Co-Chairs, Senator Helen Polley, Senator for Tasmania and Senator Wendy Askew, Senator for Tasmania.
