Advanced Communication Skills in Dementia focuses on advanced skills needed to effectively communicate with a person living with dementia.

The course builds on topics from our Dementia Essentials course such as:

  • basics of effective communication
  • non-verbal cues
  • building trust.
     

The course also introduces advanced techniques for tailoring communication to dementia stages and types, focus on emotional intelligence, cultural context, enablement and applied strategies for workplace scenarios.

Advanced Communication Skills in Dementia forms part of the Advanced Dementia Practice Program.

Course structure

Advanced Communication Skills in Dementia includes:

  • two live sessions per unit (webinars or virtual classrooms)
    • one orientation session
    • one deep-dive learning and discussion session
  • online learning at your own pace.

On completing the course, you will achieve the following unit of competency:

NAT10993004 – Optimise communication for people living with dementia

This unit explores communication needs based on changes related to dementia, how to implement effective communication, and review communication techniques that support persons living with dementia.

  • implement communication strategies
  • use effective verbal and written communication to reduce stigma
  • apply cultural and ethical sensitivities to individual needs.
