Living with Dementia Survey

Health Research Insititute

The Living with Dementia Survey project aims to better understand the experiences of people living with dementia in the community and those supporting them, and to measure the progress of the National Dementia Action Plan 2024-2034.

The findings will inform policy and programs to improve dementia diagnosis and post-diagnosis care services.

The study is conducted by the University of Canberra and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) in partnership with StepUp for Dementia Research and with support from Carers Australia and Dementia Australia.

The project has been approved by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Ethics Committee [EO2024/9/1521]

Participation

The survey can be completed online, via an interview (online or over the phone), or on paper, and will take around 40-60 minutes to complete (possibly longer if completed via an interview.)

The survey will gather information on the experiences of people who have been diagnosed with dementia as well as family and friends who provide care and support, providing the Australian Government with information on the needs of people impacted by dementia.

There are two surveys:

1. The People Living with Dementia Survey can be completed by people with dementia who are living in the community (i.e. at home, not in a residential care facility) with the support of a care partner if needed.

2. The Living with Dementia Carer Survey can be completed by people currently supporting someone with dementia (care partners).
