Usability and face validity of a hazard perception test for use in assessing fitness-to-drive

The aim of the study is to investigate the usability of a test that doctors may use in the future to assess driving ability. 

The study adheres to the Guidelines of the ethical review process of The University of Queensland and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, approval number: 2024/HE002361 

Participation

People who meet all of the following criteria may be eligible to participate: 

  • at least 65 years old,
  • hold a current unrestricted Australian driver’s licence, and
  • living with either (a) very mild to mild dementia/cognitive impairment, or (b) no dementia/cognitive impairment.

What will my participation involve?
You will be shown a test that doctors may use in the future to assess driving ability. You will then be asked about the test, including questions about your impressions about the test’s usability, acceptability and validity. Questions will be asked verbally and on paper-based questionnaires. You will also be asked some general questions about yourself and your driving experience, and you will complete a brief memory and mental functioning test.
