Advanced Skills in Therapeutic Engagement provides health workers who deliver activities and services for people living with dementia with skills in creating purposeful, meaningful engagement and supporting wellbeing.

The course also provides advanced skills and competencies in the areas of enablement-focused strategies for purpose and wellbeing, emotional connection, engagement planning and goal setting, also supports creative and inclusive activity design. The course ensures the application of knowledge into practice.

Advanced Skills in Therapeutic Engagement forms part of the Advanced Dementia Practice Program.

Course structure

Advanced Skills in Therapeutic Engagement includes:

  • three live sessions per unit (webinars or virtual classrooms)
    • one orientation session
    • two deep-dive learning and discussion sessions
  • online learning at your own pace.

On completing the course, you will achieve the following units of competency:

NAT10993003 – Deliver Dementia Support Using Enablement Strategies

This unit focuses on promoting independence and engagement through enablement approaches, helping people living with dementia plan and participate in meaningful activities and maintain their abilities.

CHCCCS040– Support Independence and Wellbeing

This unit covers techniques to support physical, emotional, and social wellbeing, encouraging a strengths-based, person-centred approach to care.

What you’ll learn

This course aims to build clinical practice skills to:

  • Understand Legislation, standards and frameworks for aged care
  • Understand support and enablement strategies
  • Support for Health and Wellbeing
  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills between persons, families, carers and the organisation
  • Apply and review enablement strategies in accordance with organisational frameworks, policies and procedures

Identify cultural and lifestyle factors that can be used to promote independence and wellbeing.
