Extend your dementia expertise

Advanced Dementia Practice is a free, online program for professionals providing dementia care. The program is run across 30-weeks, with additional breaks built in.

The program supports you to further advance your understanding of dementia, enhance your practical skills and address areas for improvement in your dementia skills and knowledge.

Engage with your dementia care peers

This program provides a flexible development opportunity for workers interested in furthering their dementia qualifications, with structured timelines that support steady progress.

Supported by our dedicated facilitators, you'll engage in webinars to meet like-minded workers and exchange dementia knowledge.

Details

- Participants must currently be working in an Australian health care setting (e.g., residential aged care, community/home care, disability, hospital, primary care) and be working with at least two people living with dementia.
- As these are accredited courses, participants will be required to submit assessments, including workplace assessments.
To complete this course, you'll need access to:
- A computer or laptop (Windows or Apple) with a webcam and a microphone
- The Internet
- The latest version of Chrome
- Microsoft Teams
- The free version of Adobe Reader

What you'll learn

You will learn:
- how to participate within a multidisciplinary team, contribute to care plans and review those plans using a range of contemporary practice
- how to identify and respond to changed behaviours through appropriate analysis and development of strategies
- how to communicate effectively while respecting cultural and lifestyle preferences to support independence for people living with dementia
- how to make contributions to the establishment of effective networks with workers, families, and carers to support well-being and the provision of dementia services
- skills to promote independence and engagement through enablement approaches
- person-centred care approaches, supporting ethical and rights-based decision-making
- how to provide care to people living with dementia in accordance with legal and ethical frameworks
- how to apply critical reflective practice to your own work role.
The Advanced Dementia Practice program consists of five courses, made of of eight singular units.

Graduates of the program are eligible to receive credit towards future qualifications, including the Certificate IV in Dementia Practice.

Advanced Communication Skills in Dementia focuses on advanced skills needed to effectively communicate with a person living with dementia.

Ensuring a Human Rights Approach in Dementia Practice focuses on embedding a human rights-based approach to dementia care, especially important with evolving aged care standards and legislation.
