Ensuring a Human Rights Approach in Dementia Practice focuses on embedding a human rights-based approach to dementia care, especially important with evolving aged care standards and legislation.
The course builds upon topics from Dementia Essentials such as the rights of people with dementia and legal and ethical care. It provides advanced knowledge and skills in areas such as:
- embedding a human rights framework
- expanding on capacity
- consent and dignity of risk
- adhering and ensuring legislation
- abuse prevention and cultural responsiveness.
Ensuring a Human Rights Approach in Dementia Practice forms part of the Advanced Dementia Practice Program.
Course structure
Ensuring a Human Rights Approach in Dementia Practice includes:
- three live sessions per unit (webinars or virtual classrooms)
- one orientation session
- two deep-dive learning and discussion sessions
- online learning at your own pace.
On completing the course, you’ll earn the following units of competency:
CHCLEG001 – Work Legally and Ethically
This unit covers the legal and ethical responsibilities of care workers, ensuring services uphold the rights and dignity of people living with dementia.
CHCDIV001 – Work with Diverse People
This unit develops the skills and awareness needed to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, social, and personal backgrounds. It emphasises the importance of cultural safety, inclusive communication, and tailoring care to meet the unique needs of each person living with dementia.
This unit also provides a foundational understanding of dementia and person-centred care approaches, supporting ethical and rights-based decision-making.
